07-27-2018. Day 143. 0 miles. Breezy Acres Motel, Skowhegan, Maine. (703.5 + 140.1 = 843.6 + 8.8 = 852.4 Miles)e

A Home Away From Home

I couldn’t ask for a better place to be while attempting to get beyond this aggravating dizziness. Dennis and Nancy Willette have owned the motel for 39 years and before them the owners were here for 20 years. The grounds and buildings are spotless. Like many New England farms the large home is interconnected to the barn because of the wicked winters. The barn is then connected to the motel.

They immediately made us family and between the two of them our every need has been met. To top it off Dennis is a Vietnam Vet and huge Boston Red Sox fan so we have no shortage of things in common.

No doubt about it. If you find yourself touring this part of Maine Breezy Acres Motel with Dennis and Nancy is the place to stay.

Jedmorgensen (Rich Reece)

Jed continues to be here with me. Thanks to Dennis we have been able to roam about town for meals and needed supplies. Jed has an interest in ghost stories so we have visited the local theatre which is supposedly haunted. The young lady there has given Jed the grand tour of the entire building as I spin while standing still out front. I have heard of no sightings while the visitation was in progress. Basically this is a small town of 8,000 who are all warm and friendly. (Well maybe less one cab driver who was friendly but opinionated)

Skowhegan Fire Department

I have an attraction to fire departments. In this community like Oconee the EMS is hospital based. Sirens are infrequent…… it would seem that people call an ambulance only if it’s a real need. How nice.

Losses and Dreams

The once thriving factory in the background is now a storehouse for items obtained through bankruptcy. A secondary business in the building is The Fun House. Somehow I have a difficult time combining fun with bankruptcies.

The message on the church marquee is a bit more enlightening though. If you hold on too long on to your dreams they may hang up on you. I need to be undizzy and hike.

The 1987 Flood

In 1987 a major flood devastated the downtown area washing out the main bridge. Recovery is now complete. The New Balance Shoe production takes place here so there is at least a semblance of the work of day’s past.

As for me ….. I remain dizzy. I want to say I’m improved but if I’m honest with myself it waxes and wanes.
