08-02-2018. Day 149. 0 miles. Breezy Acres Motel, Skowhegan, Maine. (703.5 + 140.1 = 843.6 = + 8.8 = 852.4 Miles)

I Promised Buster My Left Great Toenail

That I would not expose him to the world again and so on this day I have completed my final physical exam, lab test, MRI review on the subject of vertigo.

I am on my own (accompanied by Buster) in waiting out the passage of this dad-burned case of anti Appalachian Trailitis.

Having said that I can’t move to that level without thanking Abby Walker, D.C. who owns Chiro Care of Skowhegan, Maine; P.R. Johnson, D.C. who owns Health Source of Seneca, SC and Dr. Bill Chiles of Oconee County, South Carolina. Each gave me honest input as to the findings of my situation and each played a major roll in my decision to sit tight for the moment, wait for symptoms to pass, and then to finish this little adventure.

Each day is better….. but…… still unsteady …. not dizzy…… more unbalanced than dizzy.

This Place Has to Pay a View Tax

As it turns out Maine has a View Tax. If your property has a view that is deemed to improve the value of your property you get a ‘view tax’. This old home across the street from Breezy Acres Motel has to pay it. The owner actually planted some rapidly growing trees in the hopes of blocking the view of what amounts to a hill in the distance but they evidently shed stuff so he cut them down. His View Tax is alive and well in Skowhegan, Maine!

  1. I think Buster might be telling you something. I know you are frustrated, bored and anxious not a good cocktail for you. Hope you are ready to keep on trucking very soon (and so do you). I guess we will see you by Christmas but that’s only 4 1/2 months away. Do u need somebody to bring you some skates or a moped? Lol

  2. If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet.

    Taxman, by the Beatles

Little known additional verse for Maine residents:

If you can see a hill, I’ll send a bill
A nice sunset costs more? Sure will!
    A waterfall may seem serene,
But it will make your tax bill quite obscene.

Cause I’m the taxman, yeah, the taxman.

    You’re welcome.

    Hope you can Hike On!

For what it’s worth, A.T. legend Grandma Gatewood got lost and never made it out of Maine the first time she attempted to hike the A.T. Park Rangers who had been searching for her advised her to go home and not come back. She went home but, undeterred, she did come back. She ended up hiking the A.T. three times. Then she hiked the 2100 mile Oregon Trail once to boot!

      1. I tried to get Jed to hike the Oregon Coast Trail with me instead of the AT. It’s only 400 miles & 160 miles of it is on the beach. Plus, if you hike in July daytime highs rarely get out of the 60’s & you can stay in a motel or b&b every night. Sounded like perfect hiking to me.

  3. I have good friend who lives in Oregon. I watched that hike on Documentaries on NETFLIX. Beautiful! I am so happy that here in SC we have no VIEW TAX, so do not bring any ideas home with you. All our beauty here we are trying to keep it a secret. Hope you will be skipping down the trail very soon.
